Sahuarita Road Project Wins MPA Common Ground Award
The Town of Sahuarita won the Common Ground Award from the Metropolitan Pima Alliance on Friday, December 5th, 2014, for the Sahuarita Road widening project in the Public Works Category.
EEC performed engineering design for all roadway and drainage improvements for 2.5 miles of Sahuarita Road and 2 miles of Nogales Highway including a new Santa Cruz River bridge. The project consisted of widening Sahuarita Road to a four-lane divided roadway with landscaped medians, curb, sidewalk, and drainage structures.
Collaboration has always been the facilitator of large public works projects, and Sahuarita Road has exemplified that concept. Through the CM-at-Risk (CMAR) delivery system, close teamwork by the three member team of Owner, Designer, and Contractor has resulted in a $32 million RTA-funded project that is improving traffic service in the community for decades to come, while under budget and on schedule.
This has been possible through the implementation of a well-developed communication strategy involving all parties, with responsiveness and commitment to the project success as drivers of this process. As an example of this process, poor overbank subgrades required variable pavement structural solutions. With input from roadway designers for quantity impacts and geotechnical designers for over-excavation and geogrid reinforcement considerations, the Contractor was able to provide alternative earthwork, structural section, and geogrid reinforcement on the project in the most cost effective way benefitting the Owner and the tax-paying public.
EEC congratulates the Town of Sahuarita on their achievement!Back To News
