Kitt Peak Water System Improvements

EEC provided professional engineering services for the evaluation and design improvements of the potable water treatment system at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Kitt Peak National Observatory is located on Kitt Peak of the Quinlan Mountains on the Tohono O’odham Nation, approximately 55 miles southwest of Tucson.

The existing potable water system was an older treatment delivery system and had been experiencing elevated disinfection byproduct (DBP) concentrations. The National Optical Astronomy Observatory received funding under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act to evaluate and improve the existing remote water treatment and delivery system.

EEC prepared an evaluation report to identify deficiencies and to recommend water treatment system improvements. The evaluation was based on review of existing water quality test results from selected locations within the treatment and distribution system, review of existing EPA documentation and correspondence regarding the system operations, review as-built and system maps plans, and on-site review of the system components and processes including discussions with operation staff.

Due to the system’s age and poor record keeping, it was necessary for EEC to survey and prepare as-built plans of the existing system, and provide a flow process diagram. EEC prepared design plans and specifications for the demolition and relocation of the existing filtration system, piping system, chemical feed equipment and storage, water transfer pumps and booster pumps, and system appurtenances. Design plans and specifications were prepared for new distribution system including all valving, piping and flow metering equipment, chemical feed pumping and storage
equipment, replacement of treatment filter media and rehabilitation of existing water storage tanks. EEC prepared all necessary design reports and supporting documents for submittal to all review agencies and also prepared quantity and construction cost estimates.

EEC provided post design support by attending pre-proposal meeting and providing responses to inquiries, reviewing bid responses and reviewing contractor submittals. EEC also provided periodic review of contractor work to ensure compliance with engineering design and attended periodic construction progress meetings.
