Subsurface Site Investigations
EEC has conducted several hundred investigations of soil and water for potential contamination resulting from releases of regulated chemicals. Soil investigations have included sampling to 250 feet below the land surface (bls). Groundwater investigations have ranged from 10 to 600 feet bls.
EEC has completed soil investigations and groundwater investigations for explosives, petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, pesticides, PCBs and heavy metals. EEC's experience and fate and transport knowledge allows us to complete soil and groundwater investigations with targeted sampling, thus providing cost savings to our clients.
Service Areas Include:
- Surface Sampling
- Deep Soil Impacts
- Groundwater Assessments for Contamination
- Petroleum Hydrocarbons
- Chlorinated Solvents
Project Experience:
Soil and Groundwater Investigations, Fort Huachuca, Arizona
EEC conducted more than 60 subsurface soil and groundwater investigations resulting from releases of regulated petroleum products and other compounds. EEC has obtained regulatory closure for 57 of the sites investigated to date.
Luke Air Force Base Deep Soil Assessment, Luke AFB, Arizona
EEC, through the Corps of Engineers, assessed the vertical extent of soil contamination from former above-ground fuel storage tanks. Using a CME-75 hollow-stem auger drill rig, soil samples were obtained from each 10-foot depth to a total depth of 220 feet. The highlight of this project was that the depth achieved was greater than EEC or the drilling firm anticipated.
Canelo Work Station, Coronado National Forest
EEC was contracted to complete the assessment of subsurface soil and groundwater that was impacted by the release of fuel from an underground storage tank. EEC provided design, construction management, operation and maintenance of a soil vapor extraction system, groundwater extraction with pumping, and a treatment and re-injection system.
Long-Term Groundwater Monitoring/Sampling, Fort Huachuca, Arizona
EEC has been monitoring groundwater quality at three sites on Fort Huachuca since 1993. The sites include the former PX gas station, the South Range Landfill, and the East Range Mineshaft. EEC conducts groundwater sampling at monitoring wells on a semi-annual or quarterly basis. The data derived has been incorporated into the regulatory reports.
Safford Pesticide Contamination, Safford, Arizona
EEC conducted a remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) for pesticide contamination at the Safford Municipal Airport. The project involved Phase I evaluation and Phase II surface and subsurface soil sampling, investigations for responsible party determination, and regulatory negotiations.
Sparkle Cleaners Soil Vapor Extraction System, Tucson, Arizona
EEC assessed the release of tetrachloroethylene, a dry cleaning solvent, by completing soil borings and collecting soil samples for laboratory analysis to define the extent of impacted soils, and developed a remediation plan approved by state regulators for the impacted soils. We developed specifications for a soil vapor extraction system to remediate the soil, installed and operated that system, and obtained closure for the site. EEC has also assessed more than a dozen other sites for dry cleaning residuals.
Remediation of Soil at Libby Army Airfield Fire Fighting Training Center, Fort Huachuca, Arizona
EEC assessed the extent of potentially hazardous residues in the soil caused by fire fighting training activities, and remediated contaminated soil to acceptable state standards. EEC developed and implemented a remediation work plan that included worst-case estimates of soil remediation volumes. Based on the analytical results, EEC excavated and disposed of 200 tons of impacted soils over 2,700 square feet.
