Landfills

EEC provides a full range of landfill services including permitting, assessments, monitoring programs, and closure plans. EEC has designed, installed, and operated methane recovery systems for operational and closed landfill facilities, and has prepared a closure-post closure plan for the only combined hazardous waste and low-level hazardous waste landfill in Arizona.

Service Areas Include:

  • Permitting
  • Assessments
  • Monitoring Programs
  • Closure Plans

Project Experience:

University of Arizona Page-Trowbridge Hazardous Waste Landfill, Tucson, Arizona

EEC developed a closure-post closure plan for this landfill near Oracle. The landfill was used to dispose of the University's hazardous chemicals and low-level radioactive wastes generated at the main campus facility, including the medical center. The plan incorporated the design, placement, pump testing, and sampling of five groundwater monitoring wells (depth to groundwater was 700 feet), a full site characterization, and permitting and design of a landfill cap.

Reconfiguration of Wellheads and Piping System at Rio Nuevo North Landfill, Tucson, Arizona

EEC designed and modified well vaults for approximately 20 extraction and monitoring wells during the paving of the south half of Rio Nuevo North Landfill for a parking lot.

Installation and Logging of Methane Monitoring Probe Wells at Landfill Sites, Tucson, Arizona

EEC designed and installed more than 100 landfill-gas monitoring probe wells at landfills that included the City of Tucson's Harrison Road, Nearmont, Broadway North, Cottonwood, Vincent Mullins, Rio Nuevo North, and Silverbell Landfills.

Assessment of Landfill Waste Footprint and Depth at Silverbell Jail Annex Landfill, Tucson, Arizona

EEC performed a subsurface assessment to define the boundaries and depth of previously undiscovered waste south of the City of Tucson Silverbell Jail Annex Landfill. EEC placed more than 40 exploratory boreholes to characterize waste and establish the horizontal and vertical extent of waste. Following evaluation of the data, EEC oversaw the removal and disposal of 5,000 tons of waste from the site.

Landfill Closure Plan and Groundwater Monitoring at Fort Huachuca, Arizona

EEC conducted the field investigations and prepared a closure report for an inactive landfill on the South Range of Fort Huachuca. Work included research of historical records, stormwater infiltration studies, and installation of monitoring wells. EEC conducts on-going quarterly sampling of two shallow leachate monitoring wells and four regional aquifer monitoring wells at the landfill.
