Flood Control and Drainage

Flood Studies/Floodplain Delineations

EEC has performed many floodplain studies and delineations, including washes, alluvial fans, and ponding floodplains. Experience includes critical flow, special bridges, and overtopping structures. EEC staff also provides Letters of Map Revision (LOMRs), which evaluate the application of more detailed topography to changes in basin-wide hydrology due to subtleties in local conditions.

Service Areas Include:

  • Flood Insurance Studies
  • Floodplain Delineation
  • Sedimentation
  • Erosion

Project Experience:

Green Valley Drainageway No. 13, Green Valley, Arizona

EEC prepared the drainage study and design concept report for a reach downstream of La Canada Drive in Green Valley. We used HEC-1 to determine the upstream hydrology for the 0.9 square mile watershed and the HEC-2 model for floodplain analysis. EEC investigated sedimentation and erosion hydraulic characteristics of the drainageway and proposed alternatives for bank stabilization and preventative measures for erosion.

Hatfield Wash Basin and Channel Improvements, Fort Huachuca, Arizona

EEC prepared the floodplain analysis as well as the wash and detention basin improvement plans for this project, which involved considerations for minimizing erosion both upstream and downstream of the proposed basin.

Skunk Tank Wash Floodplain Delineation Study, Maricopa County, Arizona

EEC prepared topographic mapping and delineation of the 100-year floodplain and floodway for a 4-mile reach of Skunk Tank Wash.

RWCD Canal Floodplain Delineation Study, Maricopa County, Arizona

EEC prepared topographic mapping, a hydrology study and floodplain delineation along the RWCD Canal from the Southern Canal to McKellips Road.

Walnut Creek Floodplain Delineation Study, Navajo County, Arizona

EEC calculated the 100-year peak discharges using the HEC-1 model and computed the floodplain delineation using HEC-RAS for both Walnut Creek and a major tributary to Walnut Creek.

Climax Molybdenum, Inc., Sahuarita, Arizona

EEC prepared the floodplain study and provided the design for erosion protection needed for the facility expansion and retrofit. The project included an evaluation of bank stability and channel migration characteristics for the east bank of the Santa Cruz River adjacent to the facility.

Silverbell Road, Ina Road to Cortaro Road, Marana, Arizona

EEC prepared the floodplain study for the alluvial fan drainage areas upstream of the Silverbell Road improvements. The study involved consideration of drainage improvements with several housing developments under construction upstream of the proposed roadway.

Rio Verde South Floodplain Delineation Study, Maricopa County, Arizona

Flood hydrology study for the 17 square mile Sonoran desert watershed. EEC performed a hydraulic analysis and floodplain mapping for approximately 7 linear miles of watercourses.
